Anxiety is your body’s normal response to stress. It’s a feeling of fear or uncertainty about what’s to come, which is something we all experience from time to time. However, when these feelings interfere with daily activities, are hard to control, and last a long time, you might need to take some measures to try and reduce your anxiety levels. There is both anecdotal and scientific evidence to suggest that CBD can alleviate anxiety and leave you feeling calmer.

How does CBD work to lower the stress in our bodies and minds? The short answer is, our bodies are designed to receive cannabinoids like CBD. All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, which is a signaling system that allows our cells and organs to communicate with each other. It does this with substances called endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced inside our bodies), which are neurotransmitters. Plant-based cannabinoids such as CBD can also interact with our body’s cannabinoid receptors, which are integral to the regulation of emotional behavior. Activation of these receptors can reduce fear and anxiety.

The exact way in which CBD affects cannabinoid receptors in the brain isn’t fully understood. However, it may alter serotonin signals. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, and it plays an important role in mental health. Low serotonin levels are commonly associated with people who have depression. In some cases, not having enough serotonin may also cause anxiety. For generalized anxiety disorder, CBD has been shown to reduce stress in animal studies. Doses of CBD lowered behavioral signs of anxiety, as well as physical symptoms (such as increased heart rate).

CBD may also benefit people with other forms of anxiety, such as social anxiety disorder*. Those who received CBD instead of a placebo experienced overall reduced anxiety levels. And multiple recent studies have shown that CBD can also help with PTSD symptoms, such as having nightmares and replaying negative memories. These studies have looked at CBD as both a standalone PTSD treatment as well as a supplement to traditional treatments like medication and cognitive behavioral therapy. CBD may also help treat anxiety-induced insomnia.
